Back to School Safety – What You Need to Know

It’s that time of year again, back to school! All summer your kids had free reign over the house and the neighborhood while you did nothing but worry about their safety. But now, you can rest a little easier because you know they are safe and sound at school.

However, don’t fall asleep at the wheel! Back to school also means a substantial increase in traffic and a huge increase in the risk of accidents. Unfortunately, school buses are not exempt from these hazards. Luckily, there are traffic laws that help protect your kids when they ride the bus. Pennsylvania Statutes Title 75 Pa.C.S. § 3345(a) stipulates:

“… the driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking any school bus stopped on a highway or trafficway shall stop at least ten feet before reaching the school bus when the red signal lights on the school bus are flashing and the side stop signal arms are activated…The driver shall not proceed until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated. In no event shall a driver of a vehicle resume motion of the vehicle until the school children who may have alighted from the school bus have reached a place of safety. The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection at which a school bus is stopped shall stop his vehicle at that intersection until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated.”

While most people know and understand how to operate their vehicle around a stopped school bus, accidents may happen. Automobile accidents involving children are unpleasant to imagine, but it’s important to be prepared for any situation. If your child is involved in any such crash, they may be entitled to financial compensation for their injuries and damages.
